Some form of legal expenses insurance is sometimes included as part of another business insurance policy, such as Office, Public House, Restaurant and Shop, as well as others.
There is a wide range of covers available and it is possible that the "free" cover provided is not satisfactory to fulfil your requirements.

However, if you do not already have cover or wish to tailor it to your needs, a separate policy can be obtained and may include the following.

Tax investigation. Cover for accountancy and legal costs involved in representing your business in any in-depth investigation by Inland Revenue, Dept of Social Security or HM Customs and Excise.

Defence against Prosecution. Cover for the cost of defending civil actions against you including any that arise from the Health & Safety at Work etc Act 1974, Food Safety Act 1990 and the Food Safety (General Food Hygiene) Regulations 1995.

Data Protection Act. Cover for the cost of defending civil actions against you under the Data Protection Acts 1984 and 1998 an of any awards made against you.

Premises. Cover for the cost of pursuing disputes arising out of your occupancy of property, including nuisance and trespass cover.

Contract Disputes Cover. Cover for disputes between you and a customer over a contract for goods or services worth from £500 to £5,000, including Utility contracts. NOTE! This cover only takes effect 90 days after the policy starts).

Statutory Licence Protection. The insurers will pay costs and expenses incurred if a court or relevant authority suspends, revokes or alters the terms or refuses to renew your licence.

Jury Service. The insurers will pay out up to £100 a day if one of your directors, partners or employees is called for jury service and the same amount if an employee has to attend court as a witness in connection with a claim under the policy, up to £5,000 maximum.

Employer's Protection. Covers the cost of defending disputes with employees at an Employment Tribunal including the cost of any basic or compensatory awards made against you. The insurers will provide their own specialist employment lawyers to help you in disputes with employees.

Additionally, because this is a very complex subject, you should also expect a legal and tax advice helpline that is available 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.
